The Union urban development (UD) ministry will soon move the Cabinet seeking approval to amend Article 243 (T) of the Constitution increasing quota to women in urban local bodies (ULBs) from 33 % to 50 %. The ministry plans to introduce the Constitution Amendment Bill during the monsoon session of Parliament.

“The move will result in higher priorities accorded to women’s issues in areas of governance and service delivery, such as water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, health and education,” said a UD ministry official.
