Zardari’s health is in the pink but his political well being is not
With reference to Tariq Ali’s article Shopping in Dubai (December 9), feigning illness in the face of a political crisis is a pretext extensively used by politicians. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari’s health obviously deteriorated in the face of a judicial inquiry about his involvement in sending a secret memo to the US and the subsequent wrath of the Pakistan army. Zardari’s medical condition may or may not be serious, but his political health seems to be in danger.

She is both feisty and feared
Ashok Malik’s article The lady’s in the house (December 9) is timely in as far as it analyses the influence that West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has over UPA’s decision-making and policy. From the way she tackled the Teesta accord to her getting her own on the issue of FDI in retail, there is no doubt that Banerjee’s influence is on the rise.
Ramesh Sinha, Gurgaon

I agree with Malik’s views that Mamata Banerjee is India’s most powerful chief minister today. She has not only brought an end to three decades of Left Front rule in West Bengal but also won people over by fighting against arbitrary land acquisition in Singur and now FDI in retail.
GN Prasad, Hazaribag
