A jail inmate from Alirajpur sub-jail left Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital (MYH) doctors in a fix when he refused an endoscopy which was necessary to see the position of a ball pen he had swallowed.
Inmate Madho Singh, 40, who is suffering from pseudo bezoar, a psychiatric disorder, on Wednesday was taken to the government hospital to perform endoscopy, but refused to give his consent.
Earlier, doctors noticed a pen inside his digestive system (stomach) in X-ray and decided to perform endoscopy. Doctors tried their best to take his consent, but in vain. Dr Sumit Shukla, senior surgeon at MYH, said this is not the first time that Singh came to hospital with same problem. “Couple of months back, doctors operated upon him and recovered as many as 16 objects including blade, two big needles, two pens, spanner and polythene. The doctors removed all foreign objects after three-and-a-half-hour-long surgery,” Dr Shukla informed.
On Wednesday, Singh was referred to the hospital with acute stomach pain from Alirajpur sub-jail. After initial diagnosis, the doctors found one pen in his stomach and decided to conduct an endoscopy. Dr Shukla referred case to gastroenterologist Dr Atul Shende.
Meanwhile, when jail guards accompanied with Madho Singh took him to Dr Shende for endoscopy, Singh refuse to give his consent for surgery. Failing to get his consent, doctors decided to postpone his surgery. When Dr Shende was contacted to know about his health condition, he said right now the patient is fine. But dot point of the refill could prove fatal to the patient if not removed on time as it could damage stomach wall.”
