Twelve women were made to lie on the floor after sterilisation operations on Sunday because the primary health centre (PHC) in Sawai Madhopur district, where the family camp was held, did not have enough beds.

The PHC at Malarna Station town in Malarna Doongar sub-division has six beds; they were not provided to the women who took part in the camp, said Kailash Soni, additional chief medical and health officer of Sawai Madhopur.

The women were laid down on blankets spread on the floor in the PHC’s corridor, he said. “A probe has been ordered into the matter and action will be taken against the guilty.”

He said auxiliary nurse midwives and anganwadi workers had been directed to bring only six women to the sterilisation camp.

Two such cases were reported in Rajasthan in 2016. On February 8 last year, 65 women were laid down on the floor after sterilisation operations at the Sikri community health centre in Bharatpur district.

The population growth in Rajasthan in the 2001-2011 decade was 21.44%, a decline from 28.41% growth registered during 1991-2001, official data shows.

Soni said the next sterilisation camp for women would be organised at the community health centre at Malarna Doongar in Sawai Madhopur.
