Jaipur has been declared open defecation free (ODF), but people still can be seen defecating in the open, especially in the slum areas. Keeping this in view, the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has decided to launch a campaign under which initially people will be persuaded to use toilets and if they do not pay heed to the persuasion and continue to defecate in the open, they will be penalised, said the officials.

With construction of more than 5.40 lakh individual toilets since inception of the Swacch Bharat Mission (SBM), Jaipur district is now on the third spot in the country after Pargana (5.98 lakh) and Murshidabad (5.95 lakh) of West Bengal. (HT Photo)

JMC commissioner Ravi Jain said, “We have constructed around 200 community toilets in various pockets of the city, which are equipped with water and electricity. Even then people, especially in slum areas, are defecating in the open.”

He said the JMC teams will conduct morning inspections and initially for 20-25 days the officials will persuade people not to defecate in the open and thereafter impose fines. “We have identified some areas, such as Katputli Nagar, Jhalana and Jawahar Nagar, where people are defecating in the open. The JMC in every ward has constructed community toilets — there are over 100 urinals, Sulabh toilets and around 10 toilets, which were made on built, operate and transfer basis,” he said. “In Katputli Nagar itself, there are more than 40 toilets,” he added.
