Listicle: 10 onscreen couples that should have been endgame
  • Alizeh and Ayan
Unrequited love sucks. It sucked even more for Ayan and his BFF, in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) because they had this long build-up and so much subtle tension. They had more chemistry than the Ayan-Saba pairing. Also, it was love but it was also so much angst and yearning. They had history but they were just too hesitant to be together. So frustrating for the viewer. But such good cinema. Bring back peak KJo.
  • Klaus and Caroline
The good-girl-turned-vampire and the evil vampire from The Vampire Diaries (2009 - 2017). Imagine how sexy it would be if they got together. Their chemistry was electric but they barely had any scenes together. Klaus only begins to change after he meets Caroline. We get it, writers: She would have never ended up with the villain. It spawned enough fan fiction to keep us going. But honestly, this one still hurts.
  • Andy and Haley
Modern Family’s (2009 - 2020) biggest mistake was not having these two get together. It ruined Haley’s character development, having her end up pregnant with twins and married to the loveable loser, Dylan. She’d made so much progress emotionally with Andy; the relationship mirrored the one with her parents, we all got invested, and then he was basically written off the show. Why make Andy so wholesome that he doesn’t even fit into the show?
  • Shashi and Laurent
Everybody who watched English Vinglish (2012) was lowkey hoping for these two to have some kind of happiness together. Shashi’s own husband and kids don’t appreciate her. And when she finally takes control of her life, learns a new language, makes friends -- all in a new country – we all want better things for her. Laurent was soft-spoken and gentle. Sure, he was just a friend. Sure, we understand. Had they opened a cute Indo-French bistro in NYC, we’d have been so thrilled.
  • Jess and Rory
This is a hill we’ll die on. Gilmore Girls (2000 - 2007) introduced the perfect bad boy Jess for All-American bookworm-next-door Rory. Then they teased us with a will-they-won’t-they plot. And then they just turned Rory into a cheater. But Jess and Rory were the perfect yin and yang. He understood her goals, he challenged her, and he could be honest without upsetting her. They were a good contrast and completed each other. Team Jess forever.
  • Ruby and Otis
In Sex Education (2019 -2023), a series full of people coupling up, the most unexpected pairing is probably this one. We didn’t even know we wanted them to end up together until we saw them together. The tough-as-nails mean girl was so vulnerable with him. He was literally the only person she ever invited to her house. She deserved better. And she definitely deserved a better apology from Otis at the end. Ugh.
  • Fleabag and The Priest
NGL, the ending to Fleabag (2016- 2019) is beautiful and perfect. But this is the first time viewers yearned for a priest to give up his vows since the Thorn Birds in the ’80s. Of course, The Priest chooses God over love. But that’s not before there’s incredible sexual tension, buckets of emotional intimacy, tonnes of character growth and banter that’s gold standard. Pray for us. We’re rewatching this and bawling for the 18th time.
  • Roy and Keeley
Ted Lasso (2020 -2023) managed to stay away from unnecessary relationship drama for the first two seasons. In the third season, fans are still wondering why they had to break up Roy and Keeley, seemingly for no reason. It’s not like Keeley needed to become single to figure out who she was. She was already pretty badass on her own. What a fumble. We demand a rematch.
  • Eve and Villanelle
Okay, no one was expecting the chaser and the chased to ride off into the sunset in Killing Eve (2018 - 2022). But both the cop and the killer were so fascinated with each other, we needed more. They were soulmates who had perfect disregard for the patriarchy. The ending is just so cold, abrupt and impersonal. And there were so many opportunities to say more about women’s agency. Why open a door and not walk through it.
  • Elio and Oliver
Put your peaches away. First, Call Me by Your Name (2017) give us the best, most heartwarming blossoming romance set in gorgeous, gorgeous Italy. Then they break our hearts because the young men don’t even start a relationship. Was it real or were we lulled into a false romance with warm summer days filled with art and high cheekbones? Surely they’d have found a way to meet? Boo!
