I've recently become slightly obsessed with serum-based foundations, and honestly, I think I know why: I don't want my skin to look like I've put on a full face of makeup, but I also don't want to look like I rolled straight out of bed and walked into work.

That middle ground is exactly where serum foundations shine.

I love a base that still looks like skin: smooth, fresh and naturally glowy rather than visibly layered with product. Serum-based foundations tend to have that lightweight, fluid texture that blends easily and leaves the complexion looking more even without completely masking it.

And for me, that's the sweet spot.

I have oily, acne-prone skin, so I’m usually a little wary of anything that promises a dewy finish. I don't want to end up looking greasy by lunchtime, nor do I want a foundation sitting heavily over my skin. But I've found serum-based formulas surprisingly comfortable to wear, particularly when I prep my skin properly and use the right amount.

The finish is what sold me

The biggest difference I notice is how much more natural my skin looks.

Traditional full-coverage foundations can sometimes leave me feeling like I'm wearing a layer on my face. Serum foundations, on the other hand, tend to melt into the skin and give me a more seamless finish.

They don't necessarily make every blemish disappear, and I actually don't mind that. I would rather have a little skin showing through than have a perfectly covered complexion that looks cakey up close.

For everyday work makeup, that's exactly what I want.

Lightweight doesn't have to mean boring

One misconception I had was that lightweight foundations would automatically mean poor coverage or a finish that disappears within a couple of hours.

That hasn't been my experience.

The formulas I've tried can still even out redness and pigmentation while leaving the complexion looking fresh. And because the texture is lighter, I find it much easier to build coverage only where I actually need it instead of applying a thick layer everywhere.

My little trick is to start with a thin layer across the face and then add a tiny amount around areas that need more coverage. It makes a noticeable difference to how natural the final base looks.

Why I particularly like them for oily skin

If you have oily skin like me, you might assume a serum foundation is automatically going to make you look shiny. But a lot depends on the formula, skincare underneath and how much you apply.

I prefer keeping my skincare relatively lightweight before makeup and giving each layer a little time to settle. I also don't go overboard with foundation, more product doesn't necessarily mean a better-looking base.

For me, the ideal finish is smooth and healthy-looking rather than extremely matte or extremely dewy.

And that's another reason serum foundations have become such a staple in my makeup routine.

They're perfect for the "I made an effort, but not too much" look

This is probably my favourite thing about them.

There are plenty of days when I want to look polished for work but don't want to look like I'm dressed for a wedding. Serum foundation gives me that slightly perfected version of my skin without making the rest of my makeup feel excessive.

Add concealer where needed, a little blush, brows, mascara and lip colour, and I'm done.

The result is the kind of makeup where someone might think your skin is simply having a really good day; which, frankly, is exactly the illusion I'm after.

My serum-foundation rules

After experimenting with different formulas, these are the things I keep in mind:

• Don't apply too much at once. Start thin and build only where necessary.
• Prep according to your skin type. Oily skin doesn't need layers of heavy moisturiser underneath.
• Use your fingers, a sponge or a brush depending on the formula. The application method can completely change the finish.
• Let the base settle before judging it. Some formulas look different a few minutes after application.
• Set only where you need to. I usually prefer keeping the more natural finish on the areas that don't get excessively oily.
• Don't expect serum foundation to behave like full-coverage foundation. The appeal is its skin-like finish.

For me, serum-based foundations have become the perfect compromise between "I want my skin to look like skin" and "I would still like everyone at work to know I made an effort this morning."

And honestly, that's exactly what I want from my everyday foundation.
