Independence Day 2026: Is it the 79th or the 80th Independence Day?

As in every year, there is confusion about whether 2026 marks the 79th or 80th Independence Day. To clarify, in 2026, India will celebrate its 80th Independence Day. India achieved its freedom from British colonisers on August 15, 1947.

The confusion arises because people often simply subtract 1947 from the present year, which is 2026, and arrive at 79. The mistake happens because they don't factor in the first celebration itself. Therefore, the correct way is to count August 15, 1947 — the day India became independent — as the first Independence Day. Then, 2026 will be the 80th anniversary of India’s freedom.

India gained independence from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947.

Independence Day 2026 theme

On August 15, 1947, India gained its independence from two centuries of colonial rule. After widespread civil disobedience and non-cooperation movements, revolutionary activities, political negotiations, and various forms of resistance by freedom fighters and citizens of the nation, India achieved independence from British rule.

The Independence Day celebrations hold great significance, as they remind the people of India to uphold the revolutionary ideas and values that helped us achieve independence and to commemorate the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters.

Every year, celebrations are observed across India, with state capitals, government offices, schools, and communities holding flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural performances.

The official Independence Day programme begins with the presentation of a Guard of Honour by the Armed Forces and the Delhi Police to the Prime Minister of India. It is followed by the unfurling of the tricolour, accompanied by the National Anthem and the 21-gun salute. Helicopters of the Indian Air Force also shower flower petals over the Red Fort, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also delivers his Independence Day address.
