The annual address is being broadcast on Akashvani’s national network and telecast live on Doordarshan channels. The speech was delivered first in Hindi, followed by English. Regional-language versions will be aired later on Doordarshan and Akashvani.
The address comes a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech from the Red Fort and as India marks 80 years of Independence.
How August 15 is celebrated
India celebrates Independence Day every year on August 15 to mark the country’s freedom from British colonial rule. India became independent on August 15, 1947, after decades of political struggle and the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters.
Why August 15?
The British Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act in 1947, which made way for the creation of two independent dominions - India and Pakistan. India formally became independent at midnight between August 14 and 15.
India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, addressed the nation at the historic moment with his famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech. He spoke of India’s transition from colonial rule to freedom and the responsibilities that came with independence.
