President Murmu on Indus Water Treaty suspension: ‘Decisive step in interest of nation, farmers'
We have succeeded in bringing more than 25 crore people out of poverty, President Murmu said in her address to the nation.
President Droupadi Murmu on Friday said Operation Sindoor sent a “clear and firm message” to terrorists and their supporters that they would face consequences for their actions, regardless of where they hid. She also said the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with a country that “harbours terrorism” was a decisive step in India’s national interest, particularly for farmers.
Addressing the nation on the eve of Independence Day, Murmu spoke about the capabilities of the Indian armed forces and said Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, showed their ability to act with precision.

“On May 7, we commemorated the completion of one year since the launch of Operation Sindoor. We remembered the unmatched valour of our Armed Forces. That historic operation against terrorism demonstrated the capability of the Indian Armed Forces to act with precision. It sent a clear and firm message to terrorists and those who support them, that no matter where they hide, they will have to face the consequences of their actions,” the President said.
“Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with the country that harbours terrorism is a decisive step in the interest of our nation, especially the farmers,” she added.
IWT suspension
The President did not name Pakistan while referring to the suspension of the treaty, saying India had suspended the IWT with a country that “harbours terrorism”.
The Indus Waters Treaty was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 and governs the sharing of the waters of the Indus river system.
India announced that the treaty would be held in abeyance with immediate effect until Pakistan “credibly and irrevocably abjures” its support for cross-border terrorism.
This came after the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people were killed.
Operation Sindoor
Murmu recalled the armed forces’ role in Operation Sindoor, which India launched in response to the Pahalgam attack.
The operation targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), with India saying the strikes were aimed at terror camps and training facilities linked to the perpetrators and planners of the attack.
India and Pakistan later agreed to a ceasefire following an escalation that saw attacks on military targets.
The President also recalled Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed on July 26, and said India took pride in its tradition of overcoming forces hostile to humanity while upholding truth and justice.
