‘You thought you will get rid of me’: When Vajpayee returned to Lucknow
Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee won Lucknow in 1991 with more than one lakh votes and thereafter returned to Lok Sabha from the seat for four more terms.
Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who represented the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency for five terms from 1991, had an interesting take on his two defeats from the constituency.
Having lost twice from Lucknow, in 1953 and 1957, Vajpayee returned to contest from the seat in 1991. Addressing a poll rally he, in his characteristic style and quoting a song said: “What did you all think that you will get rid of me. I want to tell you that Lucknow is my home... I will see for how long will you not make me an MP”
In 1991, the former prime minister also contested from Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh. When asked which seat would he retain, Vajpayee said, “Whichever seat I win with a bigger margin.”

He won Lucknow with more than one lakh votes and thereafter returned to Lok Sabha from the seat for four more terms.
Vajpayee was a 10 times Parliamentarian, 8 times from Lok Sabha and twice from Rajya Sabha.
He was succeeded for one term by Lalji Tandon in the Lucknow LokSabha seat, which is now represented by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
