Major rivers in UP still in spate

Vehicular, rail traffic hit as some bridges damaged

The flood situation remained grim in parts of the state with major rivers still in spate on Wednesday. The Ganga, Yamuna, Sharda, Ghaghra, Budhi Rapti and Kuwano were flowing above the danger mark at various places, inspector general (crime) Ashish Gupta said in Lucknow.

The movement of traffic on Muzaffarnagar-Laksar highway was disrupted as swift currents damaged the bridge there. Movement of rail traffic on the Saharanpur- Ambala route was also disrupted after a bridge was damaged. Irrigation department officers said Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Bijnor, Pilibhit, Shamli, Amroha and Lakhimpur Kheri were also flood affected.

The Ganga, Rapti, Ghaghra, Gomti and Ramganga were rising along their course at several places, the Central Water Commission said. Around 300 villages situated in the low-lying areas of embankment of the Ramganga near Bareilly were facing aflood threat. Two people lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Bahraich and Barabanki districts since Tuesday evening, officials said.

There were also reports of several houses collapsing in different places due to torrential rains, they added. The weather office said moderate to heavy rains occurred at few places in western Uttar Pradesh since Tuesday evening. Fatehpur received 29 cm of rain and Dalmau, Dhaurarha, Pratapgarh, Fursatganj, Maharajganj and Mahoba six each.
