“As of now, we are allowing landing of civilian aircraft with a visibility of up to 1200 metres but after installation of ‘Cat One’ lights on the runway, landing will be possible with visibility as poor a 550 metres. This will certainly do away with the inconvenience to passengers as well as flight crew during bad weather conditions. It will also allow more flights to operate from this airport,” he said.

As per the airport director, the expansion of the runway was under way. “For it, around 53 acres of more land is required. Of it, 22 acres has been acquired while the rest is also expected to be acquired soon,” Yadav added.

“Before Kumbh, Indigo will start flights to 13 more destinations including Kolkata, Raipur, Gorakhpur, Bangalore, Mumbai, Dehradun, Bhubaneswar and Pune. As of now, three flights are operating every day from the newly constructed airport connecting Delhi, Lucknow, Nagpur, Indore to Allahabad,” said Yadav.

During his recent visit to the city, chief minister Yogi Adityanath reiterated his commitment to make Kumbh 2019 a memorable event for which air connectivity was a major element.

The new civil airport started functioning from June 16, 2018. Uttar Pradesh civil aviation minister Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’ had inaugurated the airport.
