Set in San Francisco during the late 1950s and early’60s, Big Eyes tells the little-known tale of the American artist Margaret Keane. A single mother, she (Adams) obsessively painted children with oversized, sad eyes.
Her second husband (Waltz) is a realtor-turned-Sunday painter who starts to palm off his wife’s work as his own claiming that “people don’t buy lady art”. A canny salesman, he ensures that the paintings became hugely popular.
As much about the unravelling of an art scandal as about female empowerment in a male-dominated era with an indelible performance by Amy Adams. Even though Burton's storytelling is sometimes erratic, the end result is a poignant portrait of an artist who claws her way back into mainstream acceptance by reclaiming her creative legacy.
