200 Bandra hotels plan to treat 20 metric tonnes of waste at source

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is in talks with about 200 hotels and restaurants to adopt the zero waste model.

The zero garbage model is where waste is first segregated at source; the dry waste is sent for recycling and the wet waste is composed. This way, the waste is not transported to the three dumping grounds in the city at Deonar, Mulund and Kanjurmarg.

Officials said that the mechanism can be adopted in all wards which will restrict bulk producers from sending waste to the already-saturated dumping grounds.

Bandra or the H/West ward office alone produces 325 metric tonnes of waste per day.

Senior officials said that Taj Lands End will soon install an organic waste convertor to process about 2.5 metric tonnes of waste. “Even Otters Club will soon initiate the processing of 100-120kg of waste per day. We recently had a meeting with the Association of Hotels and Restaurants and have got a positive feedback. All the 200 hotels should soon follow suit,” said a senior civic official from the H/West ward office.

The ward has made a list of hotels, the waste generated per day and the increase by 2018. Recently, the KB Bhabha hospital in Bandra also inaugurated a biogas plant in its premises for its kitchen waste.

By producing 9,000 metric tonnes of garbage on a daily basis, the city is reeling under a waste crisis. Of the three dumping grounds in the city, Mulund, Deonar and Kanjurmarg, waste is treated scientifically only at Kanjurmarg.Earlier this year, a huge number of fire incidents were reported at Deonar resulting in health issues for citizens living in the nearby areas of Mankhurd, Shivaji Nagar and Govandi.
