A 24-year-old woman committed suicide on Saturday after a three-year long dispute with her parents over her marriage that was declared illegal by a court in 2017.

The woman, Bhavna Subash Sabal, a resident of Lal Chakki, had tried to commit suicide last year by drinking phenyl.
Sabal, who was preparing for MBA entrance exams, met Swamy Babu Shirkhe in 2015, who worked at an egg shop. Their relationship was not accepted by Sabal’s family but the couple got married in a temple in 2016. Vinod Tejale, assistant police inspector, Vitthalwadi police station, said, “After Sabal informed her family about her marriage, they filed a case against the couple. The Kalyan court declared their marriage illegal in July, 2017.” Sabal’s parents allege she was often tortured by Shirkhe.
On Saturday, when Sabal was alone, she took some poisonous pills. “She was declared dead in a hospital. The family lodged a case against Shirkhe on Wednesday, who is yet to be arrested”, said Tejale.
