BMC blames monsoon unpreparedness on Mumbai residents’ lack of civic sense

Mumbai city news: HT in its audit has rated the monsoon preparedness of BMC at abysmally 3.8 out of 10.

A day after Hindustan Times concluded its Monsoon audit series, where the newspaper invited experts to analyse city’s monsoon preparedness, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) pointed out that it is a lack of civic sense which is causing bigger problems.

In response to the first part of the series, in which HT had highlighted the incomplete desilting of Mithi River, the BMC posted a cleaned picture of Rasraj drain in Vile parle from June 3rd, and added a caption talking about a Nehru Nagar slum running parallel to a nullah, and how its residents throw their household garbage directly into nullah.

When HT visited the site on June 2nd, the nullah was not cleared of silt and dirt. Two of the five experts gave zero marks for monsoon preparation at the site. “No work seems to have been done at the site. It is a vital nullah and should have been attended to a priority,” said DK Pathak, one of the panelists.
