Car knocks 30-year-old woman off bike, another runs over her on Mumbai highway

Victim, a resident of Virar, declared dead on arrival at hospital; drivers of both cars flee, yet to be identified, said police.

A 30-year-old pillion rider died after a car knocked her off her motorbike on the Western Express Highway and then another car ran over her on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the drivers of both cars fled after the accident. They are yet to be identified.

Priyanka Darekar and her husband Sagar, 36, live in Virar. Sagar works at a private firm, said police.

Around 12.35 pm, they reached Aarey Bridge in Goregaon (East), where a driver crashed into the couple’s bike on the northbound stretch of the highway.

The couple fell off the bike. A car ran over Priyanka, who was lying on the left side of the road. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead.

“The traffic was moving when Priyanka was run over. We have registered a case against the drivers of both cars. They are yet to be arrested,” said Jyotsna Rasam, senior inspector at Vanrai police station.

They were booked for causing death due to negligence, rash driving and causing hurt under the Indian Penal Code.
