The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai crime branch seized nearly 11kg of charas worth Rs44.88 lakh in Nagpada on Saturday. This is the second case in which a large quantity of charas brought from Kashmir was seized in Mumbai. In July, nearly 20kg of charas worth Rs82 lakh was seized.
Acting on a tip-off received by the Worli ANC unit, a team led by inspector Ninad Sawant laid a trap and nabbed the two accused from Morland Road in Nagpada, near Arabia hotel.
“The drugs were brought from Kashmir via Gujarat. This is a new route used by the accused, after we caught two others in July for supplying charas,” said Shivdeep Lande, deputy commissioner of police.
The accused have been identified as Samirbeg Shabirbeg Mirza, 29, a motor mechanic, and Noman Gulam Haider Shaikh, 24, a second-hand car dealer. Both of them are from Ahmadabad in Gujarat. The police found 5.26kg of charas valued at Rs21, 06, 000 on Mirza, and another 5.20kg valued Rs20, 82, 000 on Shaikh.
The duo does not have a criminal record. They had arrived in the city on the same day and were to leave after supplying the drugs to local distributors. They were produced before a magistrate court and remanded to police custody till October 23.
