In the past five years, the authorities handling the Maharashtra chief minister’s relief fund (CMRF) have managed to keep more than Rs574.57 crore in deposits in eight banks and have earned Rs41.63 crore interest from it as of May 2, according to a response to an RTI query.

The fund, which includes donations from citizens and other entities, is used to provide help to citizens who can’t afford treatment for serious ailments, are victims of certain incidents or those who won’t get aid under any government mechanism. (HT File)

The RTI plea, filed by activist Anil Galgali, sought detailed information on the CM relief fund and its use from January 1, 2005 till date.

The CM secretariat, in its response, a copy of which is with HT, said they couldn’t provide information before June 21, 2012, as the documents have been destroyed in the fire at Mantralaya.

The response stated the money has been deposited in seven nationalised and one private bank. It said the government has provided an aid of Rs242.53 crore to 22,633 people in the past 58 months . Of them, 21,943 received more than Rs183 crore as medical aid, while Rs59 crore was given as financial assistance for artificial organ transplant, accidental death and fire incidents to the rest.
