Bikers on the Western Express Highway helped nab a constable who was driving a Mumbai police van under the influence of alcohol late on Sunday, said an inspector.

The constable Ankush Sanap, 41, was arrested. He was accompanied by another policeman in the van when they were stopped by the bikers in Kandivli (East).

The van belonged to MHB Colony police station, where he was posted as a driver. Sanap left the police station with another constable identified as Parab at 11.30 pm.

Sanap, who is from the motor transport department of the Mumbai police, has been attached with the MHB Colony police station. He had taken the police van to Santacruz for refueling.

“When vehicles are to be refueled, a policeman always accompanies the driver. As per the procedure, constable Parab joined him. He was not found drunk,” said Ashok Jadhav, senior inspector at MHB Colony police station.

Constables Sanap and Parab were returning to the police station after refueling when the bikers spotted the van near Saidham Bridge on the highway. The bikers stopped the van after noticing that he was not driving properly, said another official. One biker inquired with the constable and suspected that he was drunk.

A group of men gathered around the van, while some of them recorded the incident. In one of the videos circulating on social media, the constable is seen sitting in an inebriated condition while constable Parab uses his mobile phone to make a call.

“Constable Sanap was brought to the police station and placed under arrest. We have registered a case of drunken driving. He was found to be drunk. We have also collected his blood samples which will be sent for a test,” added Jadhav
