The Shiv Sena on Wednesday criticised self-declared ‘gau rakshaks,’ saying though the country has a government that runs on Hindu ideology, it is not like the administration of the Taliban or Khomeini’s Iran.

The Sena slammed gau rakshaks saying if they think protecting the cow is patriotism and religion, they should have gone to Kashmir after the Amarnath yatra attacks to protect their country, as that too is one’s religious and patriotic duty. (File)

In an editorial in the party’s mouthpiece, Saamana, the Shiv Sena said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is having to battle criticism due to the actions of these ‘gau rakshaks’ who have started a spate of violence in the country. Modi’s condemnation of the events and subsequent warnings seem to have had little impact on gau rakshaks, the party said.

“Gau rakshaks are doing the job of planting thorns in Modi’s way and it now seems as if he has given up on them,” the party said in the editorial.

The Shiv Sena added, with the consistent attacks on Muslims, Muslim leaders may also prepare for resistance, which will be a grave threat to the country. “When that happens, none of these self-proclaimed gau rakshaks will be seen and Shiv Sainiks will have to brace for the situation,” the Sena said.
