According to the Vakola police, around 5pm, Mohammad Jhakki, 55, a businessman, was heading back to his Mazgaon home from Andheri.

Jhakki was wearing a helmet, police said. He did not see the stationary tempo. “The tempo’s tyre had burst and the driver had parked it at the corner of the bridge and was replacing the punctured tyre. Jhakki did not apply the brakes in time and crashed into the tempo,” said a police officer.

“He suffered serious injuries. But then a fast-moving Honda car dragged him ahead a few metres. The car’s driver did not bother to apply brakes in time and fled from the spot. If the driver had stopped the car, Jhakki could have been saved,” said the officer.

A police officer said, “Jhakki lived alone at his aunt’s place. He had separated from his wife. He and his cousin run a candle-making business. His cousin brother filed a First information Report (FIR) under sections 279 and 304 A of the IPC and 134 A and B of the Motor Vehicle Act for rash and negligent driving causing death and running away from the spot without rendering any help.”
