Housewife, senior citizen lose 65,000 to cyber criminals in Mumbai

On an average, two people have lost money to cyber fraud every day this year, say the police.

The latest victims of credit card debit card fraud, a housewife and a senior citizen from Amboli, lost a total of Rs 65,000 in two separate incidents.

On an average, nearly two people have fallen victim to cyber fraud every day this year. As many as 464 cases were registered till September, of which only 34 were detected.

While in one case the card’s data was leaked, in the other a cyber criminal posed as a bank official and ticked the victim into giving his card details.

According to Amboli police, both FIRs were registered on October 28.

In first case a 37-year-old housewife received 14 messages on her mobile phone, informing her about 14 bank transactions made using her credit card. She lost a total of Rs50,000

The woman was shocked, as the credit card used for the transactions was still in her possession. The police are looking at the possibility of her card details being leaked, like card cloning.

In both cases an FIR was registered under section 419 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code, and 66c and 66d of the IT Act for impersonation and cheating.
