HSC mark sheets show better scores than online results, Mumbai colleges rejoice

Mumbai city news: More students bagged distinctions (above 70% marks) than what the online results declared by the board last week showed.

Some junior colleges in Mumbai were in for a surprise on Friday, when the Maharashtra state board distributed mark sheets for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams.

Reason: more students bagged distinctions (above 70% marks) than what the online results declared by the board last week showed.

In DG Ruparel College, Matunga, 169 of 540 students’ secured distinctions. The online results had shown that none in the college had managed above 70% in the HSC exams.

“You can imagine our surprise and happiness when we found out that our HSC results were much better than what was shown on the board’s website on May 30,” said Tushar Desai, principal of the college.

The highest score — 96.62% — was from the science stream. “We were not expecting anything because we had already seen the results online. It appears that the board made a mistake in consolidating the data,” said Desai.

The story was similar at Thakur College, Kandivli. “When we saw the mark sheets on Friday, we realised that the board had made a mistake previously,” said Chaitali Chakraborty, principal. "More students bagged a distinction than was shown on the board’s website.”

Across the city, commerce students fared better than science and arts. “Commerce students did better than last year. Everyone passed and 29 students scored more than 90%. Scienc

e and Arts scores have fallen from last year,” says Vidyadhar Joshi, principal of VG Vaze College of Art, Science and Commerce.

At KC College, Churchgate, 34 students scored above 90% and 313 above 80% in commerce. “Ten students’ secured full marks in math — a rare feat,” said Hemlata Bagla, principal of the college. “The science stream had 23 students with an above 90% score and 144 students scored more than 80%. Only one could go beyond the 90% mark in the humanities stream.”

In some colleges, the results were similar to the previous year. "There is marginal improvement,” said Parag Thakkar,Principal of HR College of Commerce and Economics, Churchgate.
