Just a few days before the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exam begins, junior college teachers have asked the board to divide the science and mathematics papers to two segments each and make external examiners compulsory for social studies internal exams, among other demands.
Board officials said they will look into the demands for the 2017-18 academic session.
The Maharashtra Junior College Teachers Association, comprising about 60,000 teachers, recently met the state board officials to change the exam pattern for some of the subjects. According to teachers, science and maths are heavy in their content and it is difficult for students to study the entire syllabus for one paper.
The teachers want the papers divided into two parts , much like the SSC exams. “The board divided the science and maths papers for class 10 after we demanded it but haven’t extended it to class 12,” said Anil Deshmukh, general secretary of the association.
Another demand is to appoint external examiners for geography practicals as malpractices are rampant when in-house teachers assess it, said members of the association. The board recently mandated external examiners for internal assessments for SSC exams.
Gangadhar Mhamane, board chairperson, said that they will see if it’s possible to implement the demands next year. “We cannot make the changes this year so we will study them properly and try and do it next year,” he said.
