Killer commute: Road accidents in Maharashtra killed 1.02 lakh people in eight years

Mumbai city news: Officials said 86.2% or 88,125 of these deaths were caused by human error — poor drivers

As many as 1.02 lakh people were killed in road accidents in Maharashtra between 2009 and 2016, said state highway safety patrol (HSP) officials.

The information, revealed in response to a right to information (RTI) query states that road accidents killed 35 people a day during this period.

HSP officials said 86.2% or 88,125 of these deaths were caused by human error — poor drivers.

Statistics indicate that of 34 districts and nine commissionerates, five recorded the most deaths for seven years straight — from 2009 to 2015. They are Pune rural (7,574), Ahmednagar (6194), Nashik rural (6,000), Mumbai (4,448) and Solapur rural (4319). These districts collectively account for 28,535 deaths — 28% of people killed in road accidents.
