Maharashtra’s highways may soon get state-of-the-art toilets every 25km.

The public works department (PWD) will soon identify 300 spots to construct modern toilets with the help of oil companies that have their petrol pumps at these spots. The work on construction of 37 toilets will start immediately after the monsoon.

The companies will have to maintain the toilets as per international standards and dispose of human waste scientifically for 33 years.

The proposal will soon be sent for Cabinet nod, after which an agreement will be signed with the companies.

“The land along the state highways is usually owned by the PWD. We are identifying spots along the highways where petrol pumps can come up. We will make it mandatory for the oil companies to build state-of-the-art toilets. We had a series of meetings with the companies,” said an official from the PWD.

The scheme has been initiated under the Swachcha Maharashtra mission.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis recently announced a plan to construct toilets at regular intervals on Mumbai’s roads too. Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, while participating in state government’s Transform Maharashtra initiative, had expressed the need for more toilets in the city.
