Man held in Mumbai for duping 3 from Punjab of Rs4.5 lakh on promise of visa to Germany

According to the Marine Drive police, the accused Balbirsingh Mann, 42, is a native of Haryana.

A 42-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly duping three people from Punjab of Rs 4.5 lakh on the pretext of giving them visas to Germany.

According to the Marine Drive police, the accused Balbirsingh Mann, 42, is a native of Haryana. He came in touch with one of the victims identified as Tina Madan on Facebook and promised to give her and the other two victims — Sandeep Singh and Sharanjeet Kaur — tourist visas to Germany. The victims came to Mumbai from Amritsar in Punjab and as they had to meet a relative, they were in a hurry.

They met Mann in a hotel at Grant Road on December 7. He told them to meet them a couple of days later with the money near German consulate in Nariman Point where he would get the visa for them. He asked them to carry their files containing documents required in order to get the visas.

The trio met him their a few days later and Mann took 5,500 euros and Rs 19,500 totaling to Rs 4.5 lakh and their documents from them. He went in saying a person will come out with the token and then will take them inside to issue the visas.

Mann went in but never returned. They waited from morning till evening and then went to the police. They then informed the police that he told them he was a resident of Bandra.

“We have booked him under cheating sections of the IPC. We are trying to find out if he has a prior criminal record or if he has duped other persons using the same modus operandi,” the police official added.
