Man nabs mobile thief after 45-min chase despite being attacked with paper cutter

The incident occurred at 11.30 pm on Sunday when Nilesh Khot was on a call outside his building in ABndra (East)

A 26-year-old man from Bandra (East) fought a mobile thief, despite being attacked with a paper cutter, and chased the accused for several kilometres in two different vehicles before nabbing him with the help of Kurla police. The 45-minute chase ended successfully, as the cops managed to recover the stolen phone.

According to Kherwadi police, the incident occurred at 11.30 pm on Sunday when Nilesh Khot, 26, a resident of Nyaneshwar Nagar in Bandra (East), was on a call outside his building.

The accused, Feroze Mehboob Shaikh, 25, came from behind, snatched the phone worth Rs18,000 and ran off. Khot chased him and saw Shaikh getting into an auto-rickshaw following which he too jumped in. As the vehicle reached T Junction, near Dharavi, Shaikh attacked Khot with a paper cutter. Fearing for his life, Khot jumped off the auto-rickshaw and requested a passing by motorcyclist to help him. However, the motorcyclist asked him to get off the bike after covering just 200 metres.

Khot then took another rickshaw and continued the chase. At Kurla, he saw a couple of beat marshals and sought their help. They too joined the chase and all three nabbed Shaikh at 12.15 am. He was arrested and booked under section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt for committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in a magistrate court and remanded in police custody for a day.
