Metal structure for Mumbai’s Metro-7 pillar collapses; no casualties

The incident occurred at the Aarey junction on the Western Express Highway

A reinforcement, which is a metal structure used to fix a pier, collapsed on the service road at the Metro-7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East) construction site on Saturday evening.

The incident happened around 4pm owing to a malfunction in the crane being used to fix the shutter over the reinforcement (HT)

The incident occurred at the Aarey junction on the Western Express Highway.

Officials confirmed that no casualties were reported. However, the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) will be serving a show-cause notice to the contractor, J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd, for the mishap.

According to officials, the incident happened around 4pm owing to a malfunction in the crane being used to fix the shutter over the reinforcement.

An official press statement from MMRDA read, “At 4pm, while fixing the second shutter by Hydra crane, the Hydra’s boom touched the reinforcement bars due to leakage of air pressure, resulting in bending of the reinforcement. The reinforcement bent and twisted towards service road. Fortunately, no casualty took place.”

The reinforcement was 14 meters in length and officials said that the process of removing the structure started on Saturday itself.
