Law intern Pallavi Vikamsey, 20, whose body was found on the tracks between Currey Road and Parel was one of 10 who died in railway related incidents on Wednesday.

While one person died in Kalyan, another died in Andheri. Two died each at Kurla and Borivli, while three commuters died in Thane.
According to the government railway police, more than 2,000 people died on the tracks between January and August this year. GRP officials said about eight people are killed daily, most of whom are hit by trains while attempting to cross the tracks.
“After we are informed about a body found on the tracks, we go to the spot and send it to a nearby hospital. After establishing the person’s identity, we confirm whether it is was accidental death — even suicides are registered as accidental deaths — or whether foul play was involved,” said Machindra Chavan, assistant commissioner of police (GRP).
After police ascertain that no foul play was involved, they register a case of accidental death and hand over the body to the victim’s relatives. Officials said stringent action against offenders, deployment of personnel and improvements in infrastructure will deter commuters from crossing the tracks, thus minimising deaths. Activists, however, have demanded that authorities decongest stations first.
So far this year, 671 commuters died after they fell off trains. The majority of such cases occurred near Dadar, Wadala, Kalyan, Borivli, Mumbai Central and Vasai stations.
