Fearing that he may lose the custody of his children, a Mumbai man allegedly stabbed his estranged wife in the face at Mira Road on Tuesday evening. The woman, who suffered injuries to her face and neck, is being treated at a private hospital.

The Mira Road police are yet to file an FIR as the woman is yet to give her statement.

Imran Khan, 35, and his wife, Sonober, 32, got married in 2007 and filed for divorce in the Thane court almost a year ago. The couple has two kids aged 6 and 9.

“On Tuesday evening, Sonobar and I went to the Naya Nagar civic market. Imran was following us. Within seconds, he slashed Sonobar’s fac and neck and escaped in the crowd,” said Ghulam Rasool, 72, the woman’s father.

Rasool also suffered injuries while trying to rescue his daughter. “Imran has been threatening us of dire consequences if he loses the custody of his two kids. We have moved to our relative’s place as we are scared,” he said.

Vilas Sanap, senior police inspector, Mira Road police station, said, “We are waiting for the woman and Rasool’s health condition to stabilise so they can give us a statement. They are being treated are admitted in a private hospital and we are also awaiting for the medical report so that a case of attempt to murder and allied cases of the IPC may be filed against the accused said the official.
