Some inmates of Arthur Road Jail alleged that 1993 serial blasts convict Mustafa Dossa was not given prompt treatment. Jail officials, however, refuted the allegations, saying that Dossa was taken to JJ Hospital at 11.30pm on Tuesday, as soon as his health started deteriorating.
A jail official, who did not wish to be named, said, “In the day Dossa was taken to court for a hearing and was brought back to the jail by 5pm. He was given dinner at 8pm.”
He added, “After finishing dinner, Dossa had his medicines by 8.30pm. He then took a walk inside his barracks and went to bed.” Dossa, who had been ill for the past couple of days, developed a fever and started vomiting that night.
Harshad Ahirao, superintendent of Arthur Road jail, said, “Around 11pm he complained of chest pain and started vomiting. We immediately took him to JJ Hospital. He was admitted around 11.30pm and was visibly ill.” Later, doctors said he died of a heart attack, the official added.
Sources in the jail said that Dossa’s relatives learnt about his death and went to JJ Hospital. They told HT outside the postmortem ward that he had had heart trouble for many years. “We were praying at the mosque when we got to know that he was rushed to the hospital. He had had a heart problem for years,” a relative told HT.
