RPF constable reunites five-year-old boy lost in crowded Mumbai train with family

Om Shirsad Sathe had got separated from his mother while they were trying to get off the train at Kurla station

Hearing a child crying loudly in the overcrowded ladies compartment of a Vashi-bound train, a Railway Police Force (RPF) constable on duty at Kurla station platform on Sunday evening decided to investigate.

Om Shirsad Sathe with his mother and RPF constable DN Sawji, who rescued him.

As the train pulled out of Kurla, the constable, DN Sawji, managed to get into the men’s compartment adjacent to the women’s and looking through the grill spotted a boy crying. At the next station, Tilak Nagar, Sawji got into the women’s compartment and made his way to the five-year-old boy. “I asked him why he was alone and where his mother was. He told me that he had got separated from her in the crowded compartment when they were trying to get off at Kurla station,” he said. “Because of the huge crowd, the woman had got pushed out without the child.”

Sawji got off at the next stop with the boy, who identified himself as Om Shirsad Sathe, and travelled back to Kurla station, where he took him to the RPF office. The RPF then made several public announcements at the station about the lost child. Luckily, the boy’s mother and aunt were still at the station and heard the announcements.
