The Bandra police arrested a 30-year-old man on Thursday for allegedly extorting Rs1 lakh from a professional in his 50s by threatening to circulate a ‘sex tape’ on the Internet.

The complainant paid Rs1 lakh over a period of one year. As the accused, Hafiz Shaikh, started demanding more money, the man filed a police complaint against him.

According to the Bandra police, the complainant works with a private company in Mumbai. Shaikh, a resident Shastri Nagar in Bandra (West), is a tantric and sells amulets (taveez). Earlier this year, the complainant sought Shaikh’s help to resolve a marital dispute between his daughter and son-in-law.

After the dispute was addressed, the victim gave Shaikh Rs50,000.

Later, Shaikh told the complainant that the latter had sex with a woman at the former’s home, said the police. He also claimed that he had shot the act.

Shaikh started extorting the man by threatening to upload the video on the Internet.

Scared of social defamation, the complainant gave Shaikh Rs20,000.

When the complainant asked Shaikh to show the video but the latter denied.

Over a year, he paid Rs1 lakh to him. Fed up with Shaikh’s demands for more money, the professional filed a complaint.

On Wednesday, a first information report (FIR) was registered against Shaikh under sections 384 (extortion) and 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) of the Indian Penal Code.

A police official said, “We have got his custody. We are interrogating him further to find out if he has extorted more people using the same modus operandi.”
