To bring CET on par with JEE, Maharashtra to upgrade syllabus

The state wants to upgrade the curriculum so that Common Entrance Test (CET) for engineering admissions is on par with the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), the entrance test for claiming seats in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The CET is based on the state board’s curriculum, while the JEE follows the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus. Maharashtra wants CET to be on par with JEE in 2019.

“The chemistry and biology syllabus of state board is almost on par with the CBSE syllabus and slowly, even the physics syllabus will see changes next year. By 2019 our syllabus will be on par , if not better than CBSE,” said an official from MSBSHSE, Pune.

A reminder pertaining to syllabus upgradation was sent to the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) recently. The aim is to conduct MH-CET 2019 as an application-based exam, like the JEE, and maintain the difficulty level as well. The first message related to upgradation was sent across to the state board in March 2016 after the state first announced its decision through a government resolution (GR).

“A representative of the state board was present at the meeting during which it was decided to conduct CET on par with JEE, in terms of quality and difficulty level. Not many changes have been introduced to the exam this year, but in 2019, even the paper pattern might change so the state board needs to update its syllabus,” said Dayanand Meshram, joint director, Directorate of Technical Education (DTE).

“While the syllabus has been changed slightly, no major changes to the paper pattern has been introduced this year in order to give students time to catch up. However, 2019 onwards the changes will bring CET on par with any national level competitive exam,” added Meshram.
