No more water crisis in city? Vihar, Modak Sagar overflow

Two days of heavy rain caused two of the seven lakes supplying water to the city -- Vihar and Modak Sagar -- to overflow. Heavy rainfall of over 100mm was recorded in the catchment areas of lakes namely Modak Sagar, Tansa and Middle Vaitarna, adding 73,254 million litres within 24 hours.

The BMC lifted the 20 per cent water cut early last month. Vihar Lake that supplies 90 million litres daily (MLD) to the city started to overflow on Monday at 4.20am. Tulsi Lake was the first lake that started overflowing on July 19, this year.

Modak Sagar, which supplies 440 million litres to the city daily, started to overflow around 10.28pm. It received 167 mm of rainfall throughout Sunday, and 136.40 mm of rain till 6pm on Monday.

The current water stock in catchment areas of the seven lakes on Monday morning was 10,31,680 million litres, sufficient for another 267 days on average, said officials.

Tansa is nearing its full-supply level. Currently, Tansa’s water stock level is 127.66m, 0.97m away from its full supply mark.

Meanwhile, despite the continuous downpour, the civic body’s stormwater drain system has been working fine, said civic officials. No major waterlogging spots have been reported in the city.
