There was no one else in the house when the incident took place. Their neighbours spotted two men running out of the house from the back door.
The police suspect that the men had come to kill the daughter-in-law, Aparna Kutle. However, Sitabai might have identified them and hence they killed her too.
“It appears that the men entered the house and slashed her throat with a chopper,” said Prakash Nilewad, assistant commissioner (Panvel division).
“Their neighbour heard a thud in the house. Sitabai shouted for help from her niece who lived in the same neighbourhood. When she reached the house, the men fled,” he said. The women were pronounced dead at a hospital. The motive of the murder is not clear, said the police.
