CBD BELAPUR: Following the arrest of five doctors from Hiranandani hospital, Powai, corporators of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on Wednesday said there should be an inquiry into whether illegal kidney transplants have been performed at Hiranandani hospital, Vashi, also known as Fortis Hiranandani Hospital.
Sujit Chatterjee, CEO of Hiranandani hospital, Powai, and one of the five doctors arrested on Tuesday, is a signatory to a 2006 agreement between NMMC and Hiranandani Health Care Pvt Ltd to launch a super-specialty hospital in Navi Mumbai.
Raising the issue in the standing committee, Shiv Sena corporator M K Madhvi said, “Chatterjee had signed the agreement with NMMC on behalf of Hiranandani. This person and other doctors of the hospital have now been arrested for their role in illegal kidney transplants.”
Madhvi added, “The Hiranandani hospital in Vashi has had patients from all over the world, who pay huge sums. It is possible that illegal transplants were conducted here too, so there is a need to look into the hospital’s operations.”
Madhvi also highlighted certain issues with the agreement between NMMC and Fortis Hiranandani hospital. He said, “There are additions and edits in the typed agreement, and they have been attested only by a certain Shetty from the hospital. There is no counter signature from NMMC. Besides, why was such an important agreement not retyped? Why the handwritten change? What was the hurry?”

{{/usCountry}}He added, “In 2012, the hospital’s registration was cancelled under the Bombay Nursing Homes Registration (Amended) Act, 2005 for having more than the 150 beds it was allowed. How was the hospital allowed to continue to function?”
Dr Ramesh Nikam, the health officer who had issued the order to cancel the hospital’s registration in 2012, said, “The hospital’s registration was cancelled in 2012 when I was head of the health department. Hiranandani Health Care went to court. Since I was not the head of the department thereafter, I don’t know what happened later.”
Additional municipal commissioner Ankush Chavan said, “An administrative inquiry into various issues concerning the hospital and the agreement is underway. Once it is completed, requisite action will be taken in due course.”
Fortis Hiranandani Hospital claimed that it has been adhering to its agreement with NMMC and denied all the allegations against it.
