Four members of the five-member gang were arrested from Mira Road and Vashi by crime branch officials and the Byculla police. The police recovered ornaments worth Rs45lakh.

The arrested men have been identified as Shahnawaj Khan, 22, Jehangir Shahikh, 27, Prafulla Gaikwad, 36 and Ratan Singh, 30.

Investigators said it was Gaikwad who hatched the plan and decided each person’s share of the loot. The motive behind the crime was easy financial gains.

Officials said the accused struck businessman Mukeshkumar Sanghvi, 46 — who had been in possession of gold ornaments —at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. They acted following a tipoff from one of Sanghvi’s former employees.
