Fourteen personnel from the Navi Mumbai police have been suspended after they were caught smuggling liquor out of Goa.
On Wednesday evening, the Goa police intercepted a bus with a Reserve Bank of India sticker at the Patradevi outpost. The 14 uniformed policemen were inside the bus, sitting among 45 cases of liquor that had 500 bottles of alcohol.
The Goa police claim that their Navi Mumbai counterparts asked to be let through as they were policemen. Following a heated argument, senior officials of the Goa police reached the spot and detained the 14 policemen.
"We have seized 500 bottles from them. What was surprising was that the policemen were in uniform when they were caught smuggling liquor," said CL Patil, senior inspector with the Pernem police station.
Ashok Dongre, additional commissioner of Navi Mumbai police, said that the policemen had been suspended and a departmental inquiry would be initiated. The suspended men include an assistant police inspector, two assistant sub inspectors, six hawaldars, four police naiks and one police sipahi. They were entrusted with security for an RBI convoy.
An officer from the Goa excise department told HT that the vehicle and the liquor had been seized an offence was being registered against the cops for smuggling alcohol out of the state. The office, who requested not to be named, said that the policemen were misusing their power to smuggle liquor outside Goa.
