In 2005, Shiv Sena leader Arvind Bhonsale stopped wearing footwear to protest against heavyweight Narayan Rane’s defection to the Congress.

After Rane’s defeat from Malvan in the recent assembly polls, Sena workers plan to present him on Sunday gold-plated footwear to mark his “nine-year sacrifice”.

Bhonsale, who was once an aide of Rane, worked from Sindhudurg, where both Rane and his son were contesting, for the assembly elections.

“Corporator Kishori Pednekar got the gold-plated footwear for Bhonsale. He will be presented the chappals by Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray in Konkan,” MP Vinayak Raut said, adding it was not a part of the official programme, but an impromptu event planned by the workers.

The event is likely to be conducted at the Vithoba temple at Vengurla, where people offer footwear to the deity, if their wishes come true.

“I stopped wearing chappals on November 21, 2005. I had taken a vow that I will start wearing chappals, only when Narayan Rane loses. He had upset our Sena chief Balasaheb,” Bhonsale said.
