Car catches fire near Sahar airport, brings traffic to halt

A car caught fire on Saturday afternoon at Andheri (East) and proved to be a hindrance for motorists near the international airport. No one was injured in the incident.

A car caught fire on Saturday afternoon at Andheri (East) and proved to be a hindrance for motorists near the international airport. No one was injured in the incident.

The incident took place near Bahar Talkies located at Sahar Road in Andheri (East). The car was a Santro.

The fire officer said they received a call around 3.15pm and a fire engine was rushed to the spot. On inspecting the vehicle it was found that the battery of the car had caught fire because of a short circuit.

“We removed the car battery terminal and within minutes the fire was doused,” said a fire officer, on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

The car was on the main road when the driver saw sparks emanating from the front and immediately informed the fire brigade control room.

There was a major traffic jam on the road leading towards the airport while the fire brigade doused the fire.

“A little inconvenience could have been caused to the motorists because we cannot just begin spraying water. We have to stop ongoing traffic, clear the area and then proceed with our job. We cannot risk people standing close to the fire,” added the fire officer.
