If you grew up listening to hits from the ’70s and ’80s, you have a lot to look forward to at tonight’s gig at the Blue Frog. The performance will be a celebration of the musical style of motown, a genre made famous by artistes like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder among others. Paying tribute to them will be city-based contemporary RnB artiste Thomson Andrews and his crew of guest performers.

“The genre of motown isn’t explored much in Mumbai. That’s the reason I wanted to put together this performance. There will also be many funk and soul numbers that we’ll do. It will be a kind of celebration of all African-American styles of music,” says Thomson.

Besides him, the gig will feature guest artistes —singers Gwen Dias, Keshia Braganza, Malini Hariharan, Sheldon Pereira and drummer Darshan Doshi. “We’ve got dynamic vocalists on board, all of whom have their own unique styles,” says Thomson.

On the lines of the huge array of artistes that usually form a funk/soul ensemble, tonight’s gig will have three back-up vocalists: Murishka D’Cruz, Ryan D’souza and Lynn D’souza, in addition to a horn section comprising Shirish Malhotra (saxophone) and Ramon Ibrahim (trombone), Umang Doshi (keys), Roland Fernandes (guitars), Suresh Mendoza (bass) and Sheldon Dixon (drums).
