Civic body to build sewage treatment plant at Banganga

Strengthening its long term project to recycle the sewage generated in the city and resupply the recycled water for use, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to build a small-scale sewage treatment plant at its satellite pumping station in Banganga.

The construction of the plant is expected to start by December and the plant would become operational by May next year.

“Banganga sewage treatment plant would be a pilot project through which the feasibility and benefits of such a project would be studied before sewage recycling is taken up at other satellite pumping stations,” said Rajiv Jalota, additional municipal commissioner (projects).

Two recycling plants are already operating in the city at Love Grove and Colaba pumping stations. From these stations, 30 lakh litres and 50,000 litres of recycled water respectively is being supplied to buyers in the nearby areas. “Since laying an entire parallel conveyance network to supply recycled water is practically not possible, the concept of constructing small-scale, decentralised plants is being taken up,” said a senior civic official from the sewerage operations department. “One of the major hurdles is to find consumers who would buy recycled water from the BMC for non-potable uses,” said the official.
