CM reinstates senior police officer accused in fake contract killing

Senior IPS officer Bipin Bihari was reinstated on Wednesday. He was suspended from duty in 2008, after the Criminal Investigation Department submitted a report indicting him in a fake contract killing, involving builder Rajendra Chaturvedi.

A 1987 batch officer, Bihari was posted as the additional commissioner of police (west region) when he received his suspension in March 2008, along with 12 other policemen, including Senior Inspector of the Juhu police station Pradeep Shinde and Assistant Police Inspector Jagdish Sahil.

The CID claimed that these 13 policemen had allegedly falsely accused and arrested Chaturvedi for plotting to
murder rival developer Rashmikant Shah. Both developers had crossed swords over a multi-crore slum redevelopment project at Kalachowkie.

The state government had reinstated the other 12 policemen accused in the case, but not Bihari.

Mantralaya sources said Chief Minister Ashok Chavan cleared Bihari’s reinstatement.

As Singh is a Maharashtra cadre IPS officer, the decision on his reinstatement had to be cleared by the chief minister
himself. Bihari may soon be given posting after the state government’s clearance.
