They also suspect that the accused could have been released from jail recently and were in desperate need of money.

The JJ Marg police have prepared sketches of the trio, who snatched Sindhudurg businessman Pundalik Sawant’s bag in Kumbhawada area. The bag contained Rs. 40,000.

After the incident, Sawant, along with five witnesses, ran after the accused. When Sanjay Mayekar, 44, a witness, caught one of them, the latter pulled out a country-made firearm and shot at him. The bullet hit Rs. 10 coins in Mayekar’s back pocket and got stuck in his underwear.

The CCTV footage revealed that one of the accused was carrying the firearm in a plastic bag. When he was caught, his accomplice came to his rescue and asked him to pull out the weapon.

Shisve said police would check the records of all those who were recently released from prison to check if their descriptions matched with that of the trio.
