In a circular issued on July 20, the state information technology (IT) department has asked the municipal corporations, councils and collectors to issue prior permission to all the UID enrolment agencies in their jurisdiction for continuing UID registration.

Private enrolment agencies were roped in by the Unique Identification Authority of India to complete the registration process. Some political parties too started running registration centers at their offices.

The registration centers being run at offices of the political parties lent a political connotation to the whole registration drive. What invited the ire of the authorities was the fact that most of them were operating without proper permission.

The circular, however, has made it clear that the enrolment agencies will have to seek permission of the local authority for opening such centres while the local authorities will ensure that centres run by political parties are not allowed.

Mahesh Narvekar, civic official, in-charge for UID registrations, said, “We are co-ordinating with enrolment agencies presently operating in the city. If we find any agency operating without our permission, machine would be seized.”
