The singer's body was first taken to his Peddar Road residence where friends including Gulzar, Javed Akthar, Raj Babbar, Sonu Nigam and Madhur Bhandarkar among others bid farewell to the man with the golden voice.

"I have known Jagjitji since my Saregamapa show days, when he had come as a judge on one episode," said singer Shaan, who attended the funeral at the Chandanwadi electric crematorium at Marine Lines later in the afternoon. "It was a very solemn moment on the funeral ground because I had to let go of a legend, whose simplicity and humility was incredible," he added.

Singh's brother, Kartar Singh Dhiman, performed the last rites in the presence of Singh's grandsons, Armaan and Umer Chowdhary.

A Padma Bhushan recipient, Singh was admitted to Lilavati Hospital on September 23 after he suffered a brain haemmorhage and was in the intensive care unit since then till his death on Monday morning. His condition had deteriorated in the last few days and he was kept on life support.
